Demographic shifts and social response in Vigo

Demographic projections indicate a significant decline in the working-age population for the Galicia region of Spain, particularly in the province of Pontevedra and the city of Vigo. Between 2030 and 2040, the working-age population in Vigo is forecasted to drop by approximately 9.1%, while the population over age 64 is expected to increase significantly.

In response to labor market challenges and the need for professional inclusion, the Vigo City Council has approved the ‘Vigo Emprega 2026’ program. This municipal employment plan, backed by an allocation of approximately 1.46 million euros, aims to facilitate labor insertion through training and the creation of 75 job positions across sectors such as construction, gardening, and administration.

Expanding on these social and educational efforts, the city has launched several municipal initiatives focused on social support. The Municipal Volunteer Office is offering seven free training courses during October and November, covering topics such as addiction prevention, digital gap reduction through AI, and emotional accompaniment for the elderly.

Additionally, the city is resuming educational reinforcement workshops for Primary and Secondary students through the ‘Infancia y Familia’ program. This initiative, which has an 829,000 euro budget, provides free workshops at various social service centers to foster academic autonomy and socio-educational skills. The local government has also approved a 31,000 euro tender to provide free guided tours of the Pereiró cemetery during All Saints' Day.
