Denkyira chieftaincy dispute and security tension

Overview

Tensions have escalated in the Denkyira Traditional Area following a dispute between two rival factions. In late August 2026, the Central Regional Security Council (REGSEC) suspended all chieftaincy installations and restricted Akwasidae rituals to palace grounds in Dunkwa-On-Offin to maintain public peace. Security personnel were deployed to monitor the palaces of the feuding groups.

By mid-September 2026, the Denkyira Traditional Council intensified its grievances, demanding the removal of the District Chief Executive for Upper Denkyira West, Isaac Nsiah, and the Central North Regional Police Commander, DCOP Abraham Acquaye. The Council accused these officials of undermining traditional authority and meddling in chieftaincy affairs. Specifically, they alleged that police prevented the paramount chief, Odeefuo Boa Amponsem IV, from performing sacred river rites while providing armed protection to a different local leader at the same location. The Council warned that the continued presence of these officials could threaten regional stability.
