Denmark registration of Saildrone unmanned surface vehicles

Overview

Denmark has registered the first four Saildrone Voyager unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) under the Danish flag. This milestone was achieved through collaboration with the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA), which developed new regulations via its Regulatory Future Lab to accommodate maritime technologies that exceed existing frameworks.

The initial deployment involves the USVs performing tasks within Danish territorial waters and the Baltic Sea's exclusive economic zone. These operations include cooperation with the Danish Navy and the Danish Defence Drone Centre.

The establishment of this regulatory framework is intended to support maritime domain awareness, such as monitoring cross-border crime and illegal migration. Saildrone is also scaling production for European clients, including military applications, and is working with partners in Norway, the Netherlands, and Poland to increase delivery capacity.
