Dense fog weather alerts in Poland
Overview
In mid-October 2026, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) issued first-degree weather alerts across eight Polish voivodeships, including Podlaskie, Lubelskie, and Mazowieckie. The warnings cited the threat of dense fog that could reduce visibility to below 200 meters, creating risks for road safety and airport operations.
By late October, meteorological warnings regarding dense fog continued in the Lubuskie Voivodeship. In Szczawno-Zdrój, these conditions led to a revised timetable for the Uzdrowiskowa communication line, effective from October 31 through November 1, 2026.
On November 3, 2026, the IMGW issued new first-degree warnings for dense fog expected to affect much of Poland starting November 4. In the Mazowieckie region, visibility may drop to 200 meters in counties such as Płock, Gostynin, and Płońsk. In the Podkarpackie region, visibility could decrease to as low as 100 meters during the night of November 4 to 5. Forecasters warned of potential icing and difficult driving conditions as temperatures fall between -5°C and 0°C. Authorities advised drivers to adjust speeds, use appropriate fog lights, and avoid overtaking when visibility is limited.
Specific alerts for the Podkarpackie region remain in effect from the evening of November 4 through the morning of November 5, with heavy fog, frost, and potentially slippery road surfaces due to freezing mist expected. In mountainous areas like Bieszczady and Beskid Niski, temperatures may drop between -5°C and -1°C. While Mazowieckie may see clearer skies on Thursday, dense fog is expected to return during the night from Thursday to Friday across western, central, and southern parts of the country.
