Deportation of Ola Bini from Ecuador
Overview
Swedish cybersecurity activist and programmer Ola Bini was deported from Ecuador to Sweden in early October 2026. The deportation followed Bini’s detention in Quito on October 1 after Ecuadorian migration authorities revoked his residency visa.
Authorities justified the move using a classified report from March 2026, alleging that Bini posed a “threat and risk to public security and the structure of the State.” The administrative resolution also imposed a 10-year ban on Bini re-entering Ecuador.
Bini’s legal counsel, Carlos Soria, has challenged the legality of the proceedings, describing the actions as “illegal, arbitrary, and completely unconstitutional.” The defense noted that Bini was intercepted without a formal judicial warrant and that the deportation was executed while a habeas corpus petition remained unresolved. Bini and his team also reported being denied access to the secret documents used to justify the revocation.
Following his detention and the acquisition of emergency travel documents from the Swedish Embassy, Bini traveled from Quito via Bogotá and Frankfurt, arriving at Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport on October 3. He has expressed his intention to continue his legal defense.
