Diagonale des Fous ultra-trail race in Réunion

Overview

The Diagonale des Fous ultra-trail race in Saint-Pierre, Réunion, commenced on October 15 with approximately 3,000 participants from 122 nations. The 180-kilometer course features over 10,000 meters of positive elevation gain and is characterized by extreme humidity, heat, and steep terrain.

On October 16, Hugo Deck, a 26-year-old runner from Strasbourg, won the event. Deck completed the course in 22:54:19, breaking the 23-hour mark during his first participation in the race. This victory follows his previous win at the Maxi Race in Annecy and is considered a major milestone, as the race is recognized as one of four major competitions on the circuit.

Following the race, Deck reflected on the experience, noting the importance of maintaining “joy and lightness” despite the professionalization of trail running. He described the nearly 23-hour effort as involving a significant internal dialogue. Deck also recounted a moment of stress at the 30 km mark when his mother was not at the scheduled replenishment station, which required him to receive assistance from competitor Jean-Philippe Tschumi. He credited his parents for supporting his passion since before it became his profession.
