Dictatorship memory initiatives in Tierra del Fuego

Educational and cultural institutions in Tierra del Fuego have launched initiatives to preserve the collective memory of the region’s experience during the last civic-military dictatorship.

In September 2026, the National University of Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF) released a diptych of animated short films titled ‘Tierra del Fuego, 1976’. The project, based on research from the Institute of Culture, Society, and State, seeks to visualize historical repression and surveillance. Researcher Gabriela Fernández noted that while the region may not have hosted clandestine detention centers, the permanent presence of the Armed Forces led to “constant militarization and control of daily life.”

Following this, the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional (UTN) Regional Faculty of Tierra del Fuego held a ceremony in Rio Grande to unveil a commemorative plaque honoring dictatorship victims. This installation is part of the ‘30 Mil Pañuelos por la Memoria’ project, an artistic initiative that uses ceramic pieces featuring white scarves to establish permanent marks of memory within Argentine public spaces and institutions.
