Die Linke controversy and Berlin election results

A controversy emerged in Berlin following a campaign event for the Die Linke party in Neukölln, where the rapper Dahabflex performed. The rapper’s lyrics included phrases such as ‘Yalla Yalla Intifada’ and ‘Death to the IDF’, which critics argued constituted antisemitism by calling for the destruction of the Israeli state. Dahabflex defended his performance, stating that ‘Intifada’ refers to resistance against occupation and oppression rather than violence against civilians, and characterized interpretations of his lyrics as calls for murder as an ‘absurd distortion’ of his artistic intent. The Neukölln district branch justified the invitation based on anti-war stances. Die Linke’s top candidate, Elif Eralp, condemned the performance, labeling calls for violence as ‘absolutely unacceptable’ and stating she defends both Jewish and Palestinian lives. While the party’s state executive board held an emergency meeting and unanimously declared such calls unacceptable, no immediate disciplinary measures have been taken against the Neukölln district association. The board has instead mandated that the Neukölln branch coordinate future campaign events with the state executive while awaiting the results of an investigation by the party’s ombudsman. The scrutiny comes ahead of the Berlin regional elections and follows a June 2026 national congress where a majority of the party voted to characterize Israeli military actions in Gaza as ‘genocide’. Critics, including psychologist Tom Uhlig, have argued that antisemitism within the political left often manifests as criticism centered on the State of Israel to remain socially acceptable. Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, has urged the SPD and the Greens to avoid a coalition with Die Linke, citing concerns over antisemitic campaign slogans and a lack of internal resistance to hostility toward Jews.
