Digital commerce and technology adoption in Latin America
Overview
Digital transformation is reshaping commerce and logistics across Latin America. In Peru, mobile devices have become primary tools for business, with the Peruvian Chamber of Electronic Commerce (CAPECE) reporting that approximately 8 out of 10 online purchases are made via mobile. To leverage this, entrepreneurs are adopting social media strategies like TikTok content and live streaming, alongside artificial intelligence, to drive sales and build trust without large capital investments.
However, a digital gap persists among Peruvian micro and small enterprises (MYPE). While 90% have internet access, Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) data from July 2026 shows only 30% have made significant progress in digital processes, and only about 7% conduct sales online. Conversely, the Peruvian banking sector is seeing a surge in digital payments, which have increased nearly sevenfold per person over five years according to the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP). This shift is turning transaction data into a vital asset for real-time financial decision-making.
Operational technology is also advancing in logistics and retail. In Mexico, e-commerce growth has necessitated intelligent routing applications to manage traffic and fuel costs in major metropolitan areas. In the Peruvian retail sector, digital signage is transitioning into remote management systems. Using Content Management Systems (CMS) allows brands to control promotions and pricing in real time across multiple locations, enhancing operational agility.
