Overview

In Germany, concerns regarding digital exclusion among senior citizens have prompted various regional support initiatives. The Verbraucherzentrale Hessen warned that the transition to digital-only services, such as app-based medical appointments, risks marginalizing elderly populations who lack technical proficiency or internet access.

To address these barriers, Frankfurt am Main launched the DiTA project, providing subsidies for digital devices and free training for low-income seniors. Other regions have implemented successful literacy programs, such as Jena’s ProbierLaden, which has provided individual support to thousands of elderly visitors. Additional efforts include student-led mobile device assistance in Winnenden and video conferencing training in Emsdetten.
