Digital technology and AI integration in dental care

Overview

The dental industry is increasingly adopting digital technologies to enhance imaging, treatment planning, and orthodontic care.

Technological advancements include new hardware and software ecosystems, such as handheld X-ray systems, motion correction features for CBCT units to reduce image artifacts, and cloud-based platforms. These tools facilitate digital workflows and the creation of precise three-dimensional virtual models, which are replacing traditional physical impressions.

In orthodontics, digital scanning and planning are being utilized to facilitate clear aligner therapy. This process allows practitioners to simulate tooth movement and visualize final results before treatment begins. Michael Ruah, CEO of SouSmile, noted that digital planning provides “greater predictability,” enabling dentists to monitor the planned evolution of teeth throughout personalized treatment sequences.

Recent developments at the 55th SEPES Congress in Málaga highlighted the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and digital smile design. These technologies enable 3D facial scanning and virtual recreations of a patient’s mouth to improve planning precision. Such advancements are shifting tasks, such as manual wax modeling by laboratory technicians, toward more accurate virtual simulations for both removable and fixed prosthetics.

Guillermo Pradíes, president of the Spanish Society of Stomatological and Aesthetic Prosthetics (SEPES), noted that AI and digitalization are making interventions “faster and more predictable.” However, experts warn against purely aesthetic trends, emphasizing that ethical treatment must prioritize preserving healthy tooth tissue, as enamel cannot regenerate.
