Disability awareness initiatives in Argentina and Uruguay

In Argentina and Uruguay, community organizations and educational institutions are conducting initiatives to mark National Deaf Awareness Month and ‘Turquoise September.’

In Argentina, Escuela N. º 518 is running a two-week program in the Esquel and Trevelin regions. This includes audiometry sessions for children under seven to aid early detection of hearing issues, community walks, and educational talks to address misconceptions regarding deafness and Argentine Sign Language (LSA). The school also provides pedagogical support and advisory services to surrounding areas such as Corcovado, Lago Rosario, and Tecka.

To commemorate National Deaf Day on September 19, additional activities have expanded across Argentina. In Zárate, a public event at Plaza Mitre is focusing on communication accessibility and the recognition of LSA as a natural language. Educational initiatives include a film screening and debate at the UNCuyo Faculty of Education regarding deaf identity. In Neuquén, the deaf community is collaborating with the Subsecretaría de Discapacidad at the Universidad Nacional del Comahue to adapt the Neuquén Provincial Anthem into LSA, aiming to accurately represent musical metaphors through sign language.

In Uruguay, activities in Fray Bentos have focused on inclusion through sign language storytelling. Coordinated by Margarita Rabiru and supported by the Uruguayan Deaf Association (SUR), the program involves students, families, and teacher training institutes, emphasizing sign language as a vital tool for social connection and human expression.
