Disability rights and inclusion in Michoacán

In Michoacán, Mexico, efforts to support disability rights have expanded through both administrative restructuring and community engagement.

In Jiquilpan, the municipality established the Institute for Disability of Jiquilpan (INDIS), making it the first in the state to have an institute with administrative and financial autonomy. This initiative follows a 2025 legislative proposal to mandate such institutes across the state and is intended to serve more than 100 families with services beyond standard rehabilitation.

On a broader state level, the Michoacán State Human Rights Commission and the State Monitoring Mechanism for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities organized the inaugural ‘La Meta es la Inclusión’ race. The event, which drew over 800 participants, aims to promote inclusion and the use of public spaces for sports. The race is expected to become an annual event, and proceeds included the collection of over 700 school supply kits for special education schools. Additionally, a Michoacán delegation has been selected for the 2026 Special Olympics Mexico National Summer Games, serving as a pathway to the 2027 Special Olympics World Summer Games.
