Disappearance of Selman Alkan in Istanbul

Overview

Selman Alkan went missing in the Sultangazi district of Istanbul after leaving his home with a note and 108,000 Turkish Lira. The note instructed his relatives to ‘take the belongings and empty the house’ and stated that he would not be returning.

As the disappearance entered its ninth day, search and rescue operations expanded to include the Alibey Dam and surrounding forested areas. Security camera footage indicated Alkan entered a forested area near the Gazi Social Facility and moved toward the water.

Emergency response efforts involve the Istanbul Fire Department’s underwater search and rescue unit, police, and AFAD teams. While divers conduct underwater searches, AFAD teams are scanning the woods. K9 units have struggled to maintain a scent trail, and recent regional flooding has partially impacted the search operations.
