Disaster preparedness and response training in Latin America
Overview
Regional efforts to enhance disaster risk management and emergency response have been highlighted through various community and professional initiatives in Chile, Peru, and Mexico.
In Chile, local authorities in Hijuelas organized a Provincial Disaster Risk Management Fair involving multiple institutions, such as Senapred and the Army, to prepare for summer risks like forest fires. Similarly, in Huaraz, Peru, municipal civil defense programs conducted school-based training to teach students disaster response and the use of emergency kits.
Training efforts have since expanded toward professionalization and technical coordination. Peru’s National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) launched a course on the Basic Incident Command System to improve decision-making and resource management during emergencies. In Pachuca, Mexico, the Second International Operations 360 Congress brought together hundreds of attendees from across Mexico and Colombia to provide specialized workshops and international certifications for emergency services.
