Disinformation and fraud investigations in Thailand

Overview

Thai authorities are investigating incidents of financial fraud and the spread of disinformation. In Khon Kaen, police are looking into a case where a 73-year-old retiree lost 24.48 million baht to scammers who used the Line application to direct 27 separate fund transfers under the guise of verifying personal information.

Concurrently, cyber police are investigating a Facebook page for spreading a manipulated bank transfer slip. The image falsely claimed that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul received a 7-million-baht payment, described by some as “tea money.” Kasikornbank (KBank) issued an official statement confirming the slip is fraudulent, noting that the recipient account number shown does not exist in its system. The bank further clarified that the K PLUS application has a daily transfer limit of 5 million baht, rendering the 7-million-baht transaction technically impossible.

Anutin Charnvirakul denied the claims, stating his actual bank balance is significantly lower—approximately ten thousand baht—and that the transaction does not appear in records submitted to the National Anti-Corruption Commission. While the original post used an anonymous profile, authorities are investigating the individuals and political networks that shared the false information. A 26-year-old man from Nakhon Sawan has been identified as the individual behind the fraudulent page.
