Disney California Adventure Avatar land development

Disney has provided updates regarding the development of an ‘Avatar’-themed land at Disney California Adventure. Initial reports confirmed the project is moving forward in the Hollywood Land area, utilizing an advanced ride system similar to attractions in Shanghai Disneyland. The timeline for the project was adjusted, with the closure of the Monsters, Inc. attraction pushed to 2027 to accommodate the new land.

Further details released at the D23 event revealed that the new destination will draw inspiration from ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ and ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’. The project is expected to focus on oceanic environments and marine bioluminescence, featuring a flagship dynamic boat ride through Pandoran waterways. This headliner attraction will be a large-scale ride incorporating both indoor and outdoor segments with varying levels of intensity.

Official concept art released during the D23 fan event clarifies that the project is proceeding despite previous rumors of cancellation. While the new Pandora area is expected to be massive, it is noted to be smaller than the existing Avatar-themed land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando.

To facilitate the expansion, the ‘Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!’ attraction will permanently close. Additionally, construction is underway for a new transportation hub located east of the theme parks, which will include a bridge crossing over Harbor Boulevard to provide direct access to the park entrances. Recent updates indicate the project timeline has been adjusted to prioritize other park overhauls.
