Djibouti economic and digital development initiatives
Overview
Djibouti is implementing various programs aimed at economic empowerment and infrastructure modernization. In the Ali-Sabieh and Dikhil regions, a joint mission from the Ministry of Women and Family and the Ministry of Agriculture is overseeing the distribution of 49 million Djibouti francs in interest-free microcredits. This initiative, part of the Dress-EA project, supports 356 beneficiaries from cooperatives and community mutuals to foster income-generating activities, with a particular focus on women.
Simultaneously, the government is advancing digital infrastructure through the Djibouti Digital Foundation (DFN) and the East Africa Regional Digital Integration Project (EARDIP). These World Bank-funded projects represent a $30 million investment. The DFN has completed 26 of its 35 planned activities, while the EARDIP focuses on expanding cross-border terrestrial links, deploying 4G mobile sites, and constructing fiber optic loops to Dikhil, Tadjourah, and Obock. Officials have called for the acceleration of remaining tasks to meet the project deadline of June 30, 2027.
