Djoko Ristov judicial corruption trial

The corruption trial of former appellate judge Djoko Ristov has progressed through the presentation of intercepted communications and financial forensics. Prosecutors allege Ristov was involved in bribery related to the ‘Orient’ case, involving charges of organized crime, money laundering, and drug possession.

Evidence presented by prosecutor Iskra Hadzivasileva suggests that Ristov’s wife, Simona Ristova—a former state attorney—facilitated meetings between the judge and individuals with pending cases in the Appellate Court. Intercepted conversations indicate attempts to coordinate these meetings, including one near the Croatian Embassy.

The scope of the investigation has expanded significantly. While the case initially focused on 350,000 euros discovered hidden in a wall, financial forensics now suggest Ristov and his family controlled approximately 1.5 million euros. The defense disputes this, claiming the amount is closer to 570,000 euros.

The proceedings follow the December 2025 arrest and subsequent guilty plea of former state attorney Fehmi Stafa, who was accused of attempting to influence a judge. Prosecutors have also noted that Ristov’s phone contacts included several prominent political and business figures, a detail they argue warrants legal scrutiny.
