Domestic violence and legislative response in Moldova

Reports from Moldova have highlighted challenges regarding the efficacy of protection orders in cases of violence and harassment. One instance involved a woman who required four separate orders over six months to address violence from a former husband and subsequent physical and psychological abuse from former in-laws. In another case, Violina Șpac, the former director of ANRE, reported being subjected to stalking and threats of physical retaliation by an armed individual intended to force her resignation; despite obtaining a protection order with electronic monitoring, the aggressor refused to wear the device and violated the order.

In response to a tragedy in Măgdăcești, Moldovan politicians and lawmakers have begun proposing stricter domestic violence legislation. Renato Usatîi, leader of the Our Party, announced plans for a legislative initiative to increase penalties and accountability. During parliamentary discussions, MP Angela Cutasevici advocated for children who witness abuse to be legally recognized as victims, while Elena Grițco emphasized the necessity of timely institutional intervention.
