Domestic violence incidents involving Turkish military

Overview

In mid-September 2026, two separate incidents of domestic violence involving former or current military personnel occurred in Turkey.

In the Tarsus district of Mersin, a 47-year-old specialist sergeant serving with the Coast Guard Mediterranean Regional Command shot and killed his 46-year-old wife at her workplace before committing suicide. Reports indicated the perpetrator had been under a restraining order for approximately 1.5 years.

Three days later in Ceyhan, Adana, a retired specialist sergeant identified as Enis Demir shot and killed his former wife, Kezban Kabukçu, and their 13-year-old son, Yağız Ege Demir. The incident occurred in the Namık Kemal neighborhood after Demir arrived at the home of his former sister-in-law to attempt a reconciliation with Kabukçu, whom he had divorced approximately 1.5 months prior. Following a dispute, Demir used a service pistol to shoot both Kabukçu and his son before committing suicide.

Emergency services confirmed the deaths of Demir and Kabukçu at the scene. The 13-year-old son was rushed to Ceyhan State Hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and arm. Local authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the tragedy.
