Domestic violence response and awareness in Brazil

In the Brazilian state of Pará, prosecutor Magdalena Jaguar issued an alert during the ‘Agosto Lilás’ awareness month regarding the complex cycles of domestic violence. Jaguar noted that victims are increasingly younger and that elderly women remain vulnerable. The alert emphasized that abuse often involves silent psychological tactics, such as financial control, isolation, and emotional manipulation, and highlighted the tendency for victims to withdraw protection or return to abusive relationships.

In Paraná, new measures have been implemented to facilitate access to justice for victims. The Public Defender’s Office now allows individuals to request urgent protective measures via video call, eliminating the need for an initial in-person visit to a police station. This service includes legal guidance on family matters such as divorce and child custody.

Data from the Court of Justice of Paraná (TJPR) reported 37,522 new cases of domestic violence against women and 161 new judicial occurrences related to femicide during the first half of 2026.
