Dominican Republic-Haiti border monitoring and trade

The border situation between the Dominican Republic and Haiti has seen increased scrutiny regarding sanitary safety and commercial movement.

In response to a sanitary alert concerning potential anthrax cases in Haiti, Dominican authorities intensified inspections at the Dajabón–Juana Méndez crossing. These measures, coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture and migration officials, aim to prevent the entry of meat and other animal products to mitigate the risk of zoonotic diseases.

Simultaneously, conflicting reports have emerged regarding trade at the Dajabón-Ouanaminthe crossing. While some reports suggested that Haitian authorities, supported by national police, implemented restrictions on various Dominican goods—including food, water, and construction materials—the Dominican Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs stated that commercial exchange is continuing normally. Dominican officials noted that no official document establishing such land-based restrictions has been identified and that they remain in communication with Haitian counterparts.
