Dominican Republic health service expansion

Entities: Barahona province · Modesto Guzmán · Hospital Municipal Hacienda Estrella · Jorge Iván Camino Pérez · Luis Abinader

Overview

In early July 2026 the Dominican Republic’s National Health Service reported a historic output of over 25 million specialized health services in the first half of the year, citing intensified supervision, equipment upgrades and a push for humanised care. The surge included large increases in consultations, hospitalisations, surgeries, laboratory and imaging tests, and emergency attendances, alongside a major investment in equipment and an expansion of the National Mental Health Network.

By late July the government announced further steps to broaden community health access. The Directorate General for Community Development and the Army carried out a multi‑disciplinary health and social assistance campaign in a vulnerable neighbourhood, providing a range of medical examinations and basic supplies. President Luis Abinader also inaugurated a renovated municipal hospital in Santo Domingo Norte, adding upgraded pharmacy, vaccination, surgery and emergency‑triage facilities to serve roughly 60 000 residents. These actions illustrate a continued focus on expanding both the volume of services and the geographical reach of health infrastructure under the current administration.
