Dominican Republic JCE asset seizure in New York

Overview

A New York City Marshal has authorized the seizure and public auction of assets belonging to the Dominican Republic’s Central Electoral Board (JCE) in Manhattan. This follows a U.S. District Court ruling ordering the JCE to pay Latin Events, LLC approximately US$838,337.50, a figure that has risen to roughly US$982,261.88 including interest and legal fees.

The seizure targets movable property at the JCE’s Broadway office, including furniture, electronics, and artwork, with an auction scheduled for October 1, 2026.

In response, Yván Lorenzo, Vice President of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), has urged the JCE to seek urgent conciliation to prevent the auction. Lorenzo warned that if the seized assets fail to cover the debt, the loss of operational equipment could “jeopardize the continuity of electoral services and the voter registry for citizens living abroad.” He recommended direct dialogue with plaintiffs or central government intervention to protect the agency’s budget and operations.
