Dominican Republic prison fugitive recaptures

In late July 2026 Dominican authorities continued a series of operations to re‑apprehend inmates who had escaped from correctional facilities. On July 22 and 24, police and the Directorate General of Penitentiary Services captured two long‑standing fugitives, Jefri Pie and Alexander Fernández Vargas, in the border province of Dajabón after coordinated intelligence actions involving the National Police, Dicrim and Dintel. Both were returned to the CCR Beller facility to serve the remainder of their sentences.

A week later, on July 31, the National Police’s Division of Investigation of Crimes and Crimes Against Persons arrested José Félix García Nuñez, a 51‑year‑old serving a 30‑year term for aggravated homicide and robbery after escaping the Rafey Hombres correctional center in May 2025. The capture in Santiago de los Caballeros was executed under a court order and the fugitive was transferred to the Department of Fugitive Capture for further processing. These incidents illustrate an ongoing crackdown on prison escapes across the Dominican Republic.
