Dominican Republic prison infrastructure and rehabilitation
Overview
The Dominican Republic is expanding its correctional infrastructure and rehabilitation programs. In Higüey, the General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (DGSPC) is preparing new facilities in Anamuya to house approximately 550 individuals, including transfers from La Colón and CPL Higüey Mujeres. This complex will feature modules for women and men, as well as a pre-trial module designed to manage alternative prison measures.
Further efforts to improve the prison system include the establishment of industrial workshops at the Las Parras Correction and Rehabilitation Center, focusing on upholstery, mattress production, and garment manufacturing for school uniforms. Additionally, construction has begun on a new 400-capacity center in Neiba to replace an overcrowded facility. This new site will include technical training workshops, classrooms, and agricultural areas to support social reintegration.
