Dominican Republic tourism industry recognition
Overview
The Dominican Republic’s tourism sector has received several international honors and accolades. Frank Rainieri was presented with the WTTC Icon Award at the 26th World Travel & Tourism Council Summit in Malta, recognizing his role in establishing Punta Cana as a major destination and a pillar of the national economy.
In the hospitality and marketing sectors, the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) earned two gold Magellan Awards for its ‘Subway to Paradise’ campaign, which utilized the New York City subway system to connect with the Dominican diaspora. Additionally, Zel Punta Cana won a gold Magellan Award in the ‘All-Inclusive Resort/Hotel’ category, while Eden Roc Cap Cana received two Michelin Keys and ranked sixth among the best Caribbean resorts in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.
National recognition has also extended to industry professionals. Journalist Leonardo Medrano was honored at the fifth National Tourism Award for his 30-year career in promoting the country. Furthermore, the Dominican Association of Tourism Press (Adompretur) recognized entrepreneur and academic Luis Felipe Aquino, founder of the Caribbean Tourism Exchange (BTC), during the BTC’s 30th anniversary. This recognition coincided with the first International Tourism Journalism Forum, which addressed modern challenges such as sustainable tourism and artificial intelligence.
Expanding into niche markets, the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) and the Conference of the Dominican Episcopate recently hosted the IV Latin American and Caribbean Congress of Religious Tourism Pastoral. The itinerant event brought approximately 40 international delegates to five ecclesiastical jurisdictions to discuss the integration of faith, history, and culture within the sector. During the congress, José Armando Tavares, founder of the Technological Institute of the Americas (ITLA), also addressed the intersection of artificial intelligence and tourism, focusing on the ethical challenges and opportunities of digital transformation.
