Dominican students honored for Guinness World Record reading

Overview

A team of five Dominican students—Mayury Ariaany Vélez Sánchez, Abril Sharmin del Rosario Jiménez, Ismael Alejandro Durán de la Rosa, Maikol Yafrani Arias Sánchez, and Franchesca Alí Minier Suárez—set a Guinness World Record for the longest continuous team reading aloud. Participating in the ‘Juventud en Voz Alta’ challenge, the group read for 500 hours and 20 minutes over a period of 20 days and 20 hours, beginning August 31 and concluding on September 21. This feat surpassed the previous record of 431 hours held by a Nigerian team.

The initiative, coordinated by the Ministry of Education, involved approximately 1,500 students across 30 educational centers to promote literacy. Following the achievement, Education Minister Luis Miguel De Camps met with the students in Santo Domingo.

In a subsequent recognition, President Luis Abinader received the students at the National Palace. To support their academic development, the Dominican government awarded each participant a laptop and a full university scholarship. The students were accompanied by the Minister of Youth, Carlos Valdez, during the recognition ceremony.
