Don Rito Maresca leadership transition in Italy

Overview

Don Rito Maresca has been reassigned from his leadership role in the Mortora community in Piano di Sorrento to a new mission in Capri. This transition follows a request from Bishop Francesco Alfano for Maresca to serve the communities of Santo Stefano and Marina Grande.

Maresca described the move in a letter to followers as a divine call to “bear new fruit in a different context,” while noting it serves as a challenge for the community to remain generous. Don Carmine Sorrentino has been named as his successor in Mortora.

The announcement has met with significant emotional resistance from the Mortora community. Luigi De Maio, a prior, expressed profound disappointment, stating that the departure after nine years of service causes “human suffering” and threatens to dismantle the communal bonds and sense of belonging established by Maresca.
