In Várzea Grande, Mato Grosso, local authorities have implemented measures to address water and resource scarcity. On August 14, Governor Otaviano Pivetta inspected the activation of two artesian wells in the Santa Bárbara residential area. Part of the ‘Aliança pela Água’ (Water Alliance) program—an initiative established through a conduct adjustment agreement between the state government, city hall, the State Public Ministry, and the State Court of Accounts—these wells provide approximately 70,000 liters of water per hour to a 500,000-liter reservoir, aiming to stabilize supply for 6,000 residents who have experienced irregular service since 2019. Following this, on August 16, efforts shifted toward agricultural resilience. The Municipal Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Rural Development, in partnership with Empaer, provided training to small-scale family farmers in the Sadia III community. The training focused on silage production techniques using Capim-Açu and sugarcane to ensure livestock feed availability during drought periods and mitigate the impact of diminishing pastures. On August 26, the city announced an expansion of water infrastructure through a partnership with the Mato Grosso State Government. This includes equipping five municipal schools with artesian wells, with work already underway at the Mário Antunes de Almeida Municipal Basic Education School. Furthermore, the city is investing R$ 16,391,900.00 in the construction of three reservoirs: Imigrantes (85% complete), Costa Verde (70%), and São Mateus (7%). Once completed, these systems will provide a combined storage capacity of approximately 11.5 million liters to increase water security. Expanding on these water security efforts, Governor Pivetta recently visited the Joaquim Curvo neighborhood to monitor a reactivated well serving approximately 2,000 homes. This is part of a broader task force involving the drilling or reactivation of several wells intended to improve the water supply for roughly 15,000 households.
