Drug-related police incidents in Taiwan

Overview

Law enforcement in Taiwan have engaged in several high-stakes incidents involving drug-related offenses and dangerous driving.

In mid-August, police in the Sanxia District arrested a suspect following a 12.4-kilometer high-speed chase involving a stolen motorcycle and stolen license plates. The suspect, who tested positive for amphetamines and cathinone, faced multiple charges including theft and public danger. This followed separate reports of drug-impaired driving in Taoyuan.

By late August, a drug raid in Taichung’s East District escalated when a 44-year-old suspect attempted to ram officers with a vehicle. Police discharged at least 16 shots to stop the vehicle, resulting in a gunshot wound to the suspect’s buttocks. Authorities seized Class 1 narcotics, including ‘zombie smoke’ (etomidate), from the scene and arrested two additional passengers.
