Drug trafficking enforcement in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait

In mid-August 2026, authorities in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait intercepted methamphetamine shipments. In Saudi Arabia, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority seized 58.6 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in a shipment of men’s shoes, leading to the arrest of three individuals. Simultaneously, Kuwaiti officials foiled an attempt to smuggle 2 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine hidden within the pages of books, resulting in the arrest of an Asian national.

By late August, Kuwaiti authorities reported a significantly larger operation, seizing what they described as the largest drug shipment in the country’s history. The seizure included nearly five tons of raw Lyrica powder and approximately four million capsules, valued at roughly 490 million USD. During the operation, security forces also uncovered a complete manufacturing facility equipped with machinery for filling and partitioning capsules.

Interior Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef noted that combating narcotics is a top priority, highlighting the establishment of a specialized rehabilitation wing for women. Officials also reported that following new anti-drug legislation, drug trafficking crimes decreased by 33 percent and drug use crimes dropped by 20 percent over an eight-month period.
