Drug trafficking in the Guadalquivir River
Overview
Spanish authorities have reported a significant decline in the sighting of high-speed narco-boats in the Guadalquivir River, with sightings dropping by 80% to 35 vessels compared to previous annual peaks of 420. Officials attribute this reduction to reinforced maritime surveillance and a permanent Guardia Civil presence near the river mouth.
Despite the overall decrease in sightings, smuggling operations remain volatile. In a recent high-speed pursuit near the mouth of the river, a narcolancha intentionally rammed a Guardia Civil patrol boat, the Río Guadalmedina. The collision caused damage to the official vessel and resulted in minor injuries to several agents. The pursuit ended with the arrest of five individuals off the coast of Huelva.
