Dubai Airport passenger trends and summer operations

Overview

Dubai Airport has implemented operational measures to manage a significant surge in passenger traffic as residents return from summer holidays. On August 17, the airport processed 88,000 arrivals, with daily volumes expected to reach approximately 90,000.

To facilitate movement, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai has redistributed personnel, increased technical support, and fully activated Smart Gates using facial recognition and biometric technology. Specialized assistance has been arranged for senior citizens, patients, and families, alongside a ‘red carpet’ reception system for certain passengers at Terminal 3.

Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, noted that these preparations aim to ensure a smooth experience during the peak period.

Looking at broader performance trends for 2026, Dubai International (DXB) recorded 31.5 million passengers during the first half of the year. This figure represents a 31.3 percent decline compared to the same period in 2025, which officials attributed largely to regional airspace constraints and security disruptions. Despite this, the airport experienced a steady monthly recovery during the second quarter, with volumes increasing from 3.5 million in April to 5 million in June.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, stated that while the first half of the year tested the aviation system’s resilience, increasing airline capacity and demand signal a strong outlook for the second half of the year. Meanwhile, Sharjah International Airport also reported significant activity, handling over 390,000 passengers during the peak summer week of August 10–16.
