Dutch heritage sites open to public

In late July 2026 the historic Hermans Dijkstra farm in Midwolda opened for free public visits on July 30 and August 1, offering guided tours of period rooms, an English garden and a grain store. Volunteers led the tours and the site also hosts school visits, garden work and event rentals. The neighbouring charity Stichting ’t Olde Manegepeerd in Dalmsholte held a “Kijk & Doe‑dag” on July 26, inviting families to meet rescued thoroughbreds, help with feeding and grooming, and purchase second‑hand riding gear to fund care.

On 22 August the Tourist Information Point in Eibergen organised a 40‑km bike tour through Gelderland, linking corsowagon workshops in Beltrum, the dahliagarden at Piepermolen and a crew in Rekken; the tour charged a modest fee but was free for children up to 12, providing a behind‑the‑scenes look at flower‑parade float construction and encouraging community participation.

Further heritage open days were staged in early August and September. The historic steam pump Stoomgemaal Hertog Reijnout in Nijkerk hosted a “Ministoomdag” on 8 August, featuring operating steam pumps, the steamer Adelaar, vintage land machines and children’s activities. On 12 September the Open Monumentendag at Martenastate in Koarnjum offered free guided tours of the restored 19th‑century farmstead and its adjacent lytshús, with architects explaining the restoration and adaptive‑reuse of the agrarian site.

These coordinated events illustrate a nationwide effort by local foundations, tourism bodies and heritage organisations to showcase rural and industrial cultural heritage, engage volunteers and families, and attract tourists through free or low‑cost activities.
