E-commerce and digital transformation in Spain and Latin Am
Overview
Digital transformation and e-commerce trends continue to evolve across Latin America and Spain. In Latin America, social media drives commerce, with 80% of Guatemalan consumers purchasing via social platforms, while Mexico faces a digital gap in contract formalization.
In Spain, the digital ecosystem has entered a period of consolidation with 27 million users. Following a record-breaking 2025 where turnover reached 114.8 billion euros, the sector maintained momentum into 2026. In the first quarter of 2026, e-commerce revenue grew by 15.1%, totaling 29,643 million euros, according to the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC). Transaction volume also rose, with over 549 million operations recorded in that quarter, a 16% increase year-over-year.
Sector drivers in Spain include travel, which accounted for 8.7% of billing, and air transport at 6.4%. Gambling and betting led in transaction volume at 9.9% due to high-frequency, low-value purchases. While domestic growth is strong, Spanish consumers directed 16,604 million euros toward international platforms in early 2026.
Consumer behavior remains multi-channel and mobile-centric. Key segments include fashion, travel, and footwear, alongside a significant home decor and furniture market where 45% to 50% of shoppers participate. Trends such as flash sales and online home renovation platforms are gaining popularity, with brands like Ikea, Roca, Westwing, and Kave playing notable roles. Some retailers, such as Habitat, have completed transitions to online-only models following physical store closures.
