Early seasonal snowfall and weather shifts in Alpine regions

Overview

Early seasonal snowfall and temperature drops have been recorded across high-altitude regions in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

In Germany and Switzerland, the first snowfalls reached altitudes between 1,200 and 1,500 meters. In Germany, the German Weather Service (DWD) reported that snow or sleet could fall on the Feldberg in the Black Forest, with the snow line dropping to between 1,300 and 1,500 meters. In Switzerland, MeteoSchweiz reported significant accumulations at the Säntis station with 26 centimeters of fresh snow and 18 centimeters at Col du Grand St-Bernard. Some lower regions, such as Lenzerheide, experienced light dusting, providing an early start for certain ski areas.

In the Italian Alpine regions, specifically Piedmont, temperatures fell significantly with lows reaching 0.2°C and high winds recorded at Sacra di San Michele. Snow has also returned to the Bernina and Forcola mountain passes, as well as Dolomitic passes in Veneto, prompting winter maintenance services to begin anti-icing operations.

Italy is currently undergoing a meteorological transition. An Atlantic disturbance originating from the British Isles is expected to cause weather instability between Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24. This period is forecasted to bring heavy rainfall and a temperature drop of 2-3°C across much of the country, with significant precipitation in Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, and Tuscany, and potential snow at high altitudes in the eastern Alps. This instability may also affect the Adriatic coast, including Abruzzo, Molise, and the Gargano region.

Starting Monday, October 26, conditions are projected to improve as an expanding anticyclone brings stable, sunny conditions and warmer sub-tropical air masses to the Mediterranean basin. This high-pressure system is expected to last through the end of October, with maximum temperatures potentially reaching 18-20°C in northern cities and up to 22°C in central regions like Rome and Florence, as well as in Sicily and Sardinia.
