East Java Independence Day commemorations
Overview
East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa has initiated several programs to commemorate Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day.
Initial activities focused on spiritual and educational themes, including a mass prayer session at the Grahadi State Building to promote national unity and prosperity. The Governor also highlighted the province’s commitment to religious higher education, noting that nearly 8,000 students have received scholarships between 2019 and 2026, including support for studies at Al-Azhar in Cairo. During a graduation ceremony at Ma'had Aly Nurul Cholil, she emphasized the goal of producing experts capable of addressing modern technological and developmental challenges.
Subsequent commemorations expanded to include physical expeditions and ceremonial preparations. The Governor launched the Expedition 81 team, a group of 500 climbers tasked with raising a flag on Mount Arjuno while conducting environmental conservation efforts. Additionally, she inaugurated 76 members of the 2026 East Java Paskibraka for national flag-hoisting duties.
Following the official August 17 ceremony, Governor Khofifah organized a special event titled ‘Anak Hebat Indonesia Kuat’ (Great Children, Strong Indonesia) on August 18. This gathering was held at the Gedung Negara Grahadi to honor children who had been filmed spontaneously saluting the national flag from outside the venue's perimeter. The inclusive event hosted these children alongside orphans and local youth groups to foster national pride.
