Eastern European military defense escalation

Overview

Tensions in Eastern Europe have escalated due to increased military activity near Russian borders. In Moldova, an explosion near the Palanca border crossing with Ukraine injured a border guard and led to the temporary closure of the Palanca–Maiaky–Udobne station. Estonia has responded by implementing an ‘active defense’ strategy, shifting its focus from delaying advances to preventing incursions at the border. This strategic pivot, informed by lessons from the war in Ukraine, emphasizes defending territory from the first meter of contact. Key military movements include relocating the First Estonian Brigade from Tapa to Jõhvi and constructing a new base in Narva. To enhance long-range strike capabilities, Estonia has secured contracts for American HIMARS and South Korean Chunmoo systems. The country is also increasing its defense spending by 42 percent this year to 2.4 billion euros.

Regional security concerns have expanded to include airspace threats from fast-moving, jet-powered drones. In Estonia, Defense Minister Martin Herem is considering the acquisition of light jet aircraft to counter Russian jet-powered attack drones that can exceed speeds of 400 kilometers per hour. While Estonia currently relies on NATO air-policing rotations, Herem noted that air-to-air weapons may be the most effective countermeasure, alongside options such as computer-controlled cannons, heavy machine guns, and interceptor drones.

In Finland, Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen addressed the protocols for responding to airspace violations. Following reports of unmanned aerial vehicles discovered on Finnish territory, Häkkänen clarified that the military follows established procedures to apply proportionate force based on the nature of the threat, responding to suggestions that Russian aircraft violating Finnish airspace should be shot down.
