Ecatepec water supply and infrastructure development

Overview

The water supply situation in Ecatepec has transitioned from a legal dispute over human rights to a large-scale federal infrastructure initiative.

Following legal challenges from residents regarding irregular supply and poor water quality, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation mandated that the government guarantee a minimum of 100 liters of potable water per person daily. The Court ruled that access to water cannot be denied based on a lack of formal service contracts or property titles. In response to the mandate, local authorities reported increased coverage and significant infrastructure investment.

Subsequently, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced the ‘Plan Integral Oriente’, a 25 billion peso infrastructure plan aimed at addressing water shortages in the Valley of Mexico. This plan specifically targets the eastern region and Ecatepec through the rehabilitation of Guadalupe Lake, pipeline improvements, and the upgrading of distribution networks and wells. The National Water Commission has already restored 24 previously non-operational wells in Ecatepec to service.
