ECI preparations for 2027 Indian elections
Overview
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has conducted a series of regional visits to strengthen electoral literacy and review preparations for upcoming 2027 elections in India.
In late August, Kumar led a delegation to Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, to review preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections. The visit focused on engaging young voters through initiatives like ELC 2.0 and ECINET. During this trip, Kumar addressed technical concerns regarding electronic voting machines (EVMs), stating they are manufactured by public sector companies and lack internet, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi connectivity. He also met with approximately 500 Booth Level Officers (BLOs).
Following this, Kumar visited Goa to promote grassroots participation ahead of its 2027 elections. In Margao, he addressed roughly 1,000 BLOs regarding voter registration and digital services. Kumar reiterated the transparency of the democratic framework, noting that electoral rolls are audited by agents from both national and regional political parties.
In September 2026, Kumar began a two-day visit to Gujarat, his first trip to the state since assuming his role in February of the previous year. Operating under the theme ‘Transparency from Roll to Poll’, the visit included tributes at Sabarmati Ashram and sessions at the Ahmedabad Management Association. The itinerary focused on grassroots engagement, including meetings with over 500 Booth Level Officers at Gujarat University and interactions with more than 1,000 members of Electoral Literacy Clubs. These sessions aimed to highlight the role of local officials in maintaining transparency and to provide information regarding the ECINET digital platform, which offers services in English and 22 scheduled languages.
