Economic and sustainability developments in Mersin

Overview

In Mersin, Turkey, regional efforts are focusing on economic sustainability and resource management through both private sector initiatives and parliamentary oversight.

The Mersin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MTSO) has launched a project to assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in meeting European Green Deal requirements. This initiative, involving international partners from Belgium and Bulgaria, provides training on sustainability, carbon footprint calculation, and water efficiency to facilitate a green transformation for local exporters.

Concurrently, agricultural and energy concerns have been raised in the Turkish Parliament. Stakeholders are calling for the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to disclose scientific production costs for citrus crops—including fertilizer, irrigation, and labor—to protect farmers from economic losses. Additionally, parliamentary inquiries have addressed export risks for citrus producers stemming from Black Sea security issues and the Russia-Ukraine war, while also highlighting the need to develop Mersin’s renewable energy potential.
