Economic shifts in the Colombian coffee sector
Overview
The Colombian coffee sector continues to face production challenges following a period of record output. While the 2024-2025 coffee year reached a 33-year high, recent data indicates a sustained downward trend.
In August, production fell by 12% to 1.09 million 60-kg bags compared to the previous year, marking the second consecutive month of decline. This downturn is attributed to harvest delays caused by heavy rainfall and climate variability. Germán Bahamón, general manager of the National Federation of Coffee Growers (Fedecafe), noted that the decrease aligns with “anticipated productive adjustments.” Over the last 12 months, total production has dropped 15% to 12.58 million bags.
This reduction in availability has also impacted trade, with coffee exports contracting by 10% in August. For the cumulative 12-month period, external sales decreased by 12% to 11.69 million bags.
Economic pressures persist for producers, who have faced reduced incomes and lower real harvest values. To mitigate market volatility, the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (FNC) has utilized digital distribution through Mercado Libre. Looking ahead, Cenicafé projects a total harvest of 12.2 million bags for the 2026 coffee year based on technical monitoring.
