Economic trends and cost of living in Northern Cyprus

Northern Cyprus is experiencing various economic developments related to its investment appeal and cost of living. The region has emerged as a significant real estate hub, attracting Turkish and international investors due to its development potential and a unique investment structure based on the British pound. This interest is supported by rising tourism, with passenger numbers increasing by 17% in the first half of 2025.

As of late August 2026, fuel prices in Northern Cyprus remain lower than in neighboring Turkey and South Cyprus. Specifically, Euro Diesel is priced at 67 TL per liter, compared to 99.24 TL in South Cyprus and 83 TL in Turkey. Unleaded 95 petrol is 68.12 TL, while South Cyprus and Turkey charge 88.09 TL and 73 TL, respectively. Data indicates that the gross minimum wage in Northern Cyprus provides higher diesel purchasing power than in its neighbors, allowing for approximately 1,058 liters of diesel compared to 611 liters in South Cyprus and 398 liters in Turkey. However, the Benzinciler Birliği noted that low fuel taxes should not be the sole metric for judging the general economic status of the public.

Despite these specific advantages, the region faces an economic cycle of rising costs and shrinking markets. As wages increase, the cost of living rises, leading some residents to spend earnings in the south, which reduces local consumption and tax revenues. To manage high salary obligations amidst falling revenue, authorities have increased taxes on fuel, customs, and various funds. This has created a cycle where increased costs drive market contraction, necessitating further tax hikes. Stabilizing meat prices has been identified as a critical priority, with suggestions including removing trade barriers from the south and restructuring livestock incentives.
