Ecuadorian ecological and cultural restoration efforts

Overview

In Quito, the municipality has undertaken an ecological recovery initiative for the Machángara River micro-basin. Between 2025 and October 2026, authorities conducted 82 interventions, including planting over 2,900 native trees and plants, cleaning nearly 28,000 meters of river and ravine edges, and treating approximately 398,500 square meters of slopes. Santiago Sandoval, Quito's Secretary of Environment, noted that these efforts focus on the maintenance and recovery of natural spaces, supported by the Special Complementary Urban Plan (PUCE).

In Ambato, restoration efforts have expanded to include both cultural and environmental sectors. Provincial authorities and the Vice Minister of Culture and Heritage are discussing the recovery of abandoned historic theaters to serve local artists. Simultaneously, in the Pilahuín parish, the Tungurahua Provincial Government is conducting reforestation and revegetation near the Chiquicahua reservoir to protect high-Andean paramo ecosystems and water sources, laying the groundwork for a proposed Andean Eco-Park.
