Ecuadorian medical supply distribution initiatives

The Ecuadorian government has implemented several initiatives to improve the availability of medical supplies and essential medications across various provinces.

Initially, the government launched a national distribution exceeding USD 13 million to provide coagulation factors and inhibitors for patients with blood clotting disorders to regions including Chimborazo, Imbabura, Esmeraldas, and Guayas. Under the ‘Operation Health in Territory’ strategy, the Ministry of Public Health also targeted a 20% increase in medicine supplies for 16 health establishments in Pichincha, Guayas, Manabí, and Chimborazo.

Subsequently, the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) expanded efforts by delivering insulin doses to rural dispensaries in Manabí. This included 1,000 doses sent to the ‘El Cady’ and ‘El Higuerón’ dispensaries to support agricultural workers. Bernardo Cordovez, president of the IESS Board of Directors, stated the government is committed to preventing future shortages in these rural areas. To date, the IESS has distributed a total of 2,587 insulin doses across Manabí, Santa Elena, Los Ríos, and Guayas.

Furthering these efforts, the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) launched the ‘Ruta de la Medicina’ under President Daniel Noboa's administration. This initiative involves an investment exceeding USD 1.2 million to distribute more than 11 million units of medicines, supplies, and technical aids across 24 provinces. The distribution includes antibiotics, oncological and cardiovascular medications, and medical devices such as wheelchairs. Officials, including Minister Juan Carlos Aveiga and Vice Minister Wendy Gavica, are conducting territorial visits to monitor facility operations.
