Egypt economic growth and BRICS trade expansion

Overview

Egypt has experienced a notable increase in economic indicators, characterized by rising trade volumes with BRICS nations and record-breaking remittances. During the first half of 2026, trade with BRICS members reached approximately $36.7 billion, up from $29.3 billion in the previous year. China remains the largest exporter to Egypt, while Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are leading importers of Egyptian goods.

Remittances from Egyptians living abroad reached a record $47.3 billion for the 2025/2026 fiscal year, surpassing forecasts from the International Monetary Fund and Morgan Stanley. This influx contributed to net international reserves reaching $57.2 billion by late August 2026.

Building on this momentum, Egypt and India are seeking to expand their bilateral trade to a target of $12 billion, a significant increase from the $4.2 billion recorded in 2025. Following the 18th BRICS summit, leaders from both nations discussed cooperation in sectors such as manufacturing, clean energy, green hydrogen, and pharmaceuticals. Egypt is positioning itself as a gateway for Indian access to African and European markets, particularly through the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
