Egypt food safety monitoring amid global Salmonella risks
Overview
Following international Salmonella outbreaks, including a Salmonella Enteritidis event in Belgium, Egyptian health officials confirmed that the country’s epidemiological situation remains stable. The Ministry of Health and Population stated it is utilizing continuous surveillance and investigation systems to monitor global foodborne disease trends and assess risks to international food supply chains.
In response to these global risks, the head of the Egyptian Veterinary Syndicate, Dr. Magdy Hassan, advocated for the ‘One Health’ approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health. Hassan emphasized that food safety begins at the farm and animal level and called for addressing shortages in qualified veterinary personnel to strengthen oversight throughout the food supply chain, particularly within the poultry and animal protein sectors.
