Egypt-Japan scientific and educational cooperation

Overview

Egypt and Japan are expanding their bilateral strategic partnerships in higher education, scientific research, and technological innovation. During an official visit to Japan in early October 2026, Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Abdel Aziz Qansoua met with Japanese officials to extend the Egypt-Japan Education Partnership (EJEP) through 2031.

Key developments include the expansion of the ‘Tokatsu’ diploma program to eight universities for the 2026/2027 academic year and the planned launch of the first ‘Eji-Kosen’ institute in the 2025/2026 academic year. The two nations are also working to increase academic exchanges, joint research funding, and dual degree programs to better align scientific research with industrial needs.

Collaborative efforts are expected to focus on fields such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, water, health, and pharmaceutical sciences. Additionally, discussions involved enhancing the evaluation of Egyptian research systems through international databases and formalizing the legal status of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) research station in Cairo.
